In the old days, everything had rain gutters. Then automotive designers decided to be aerodynamic, and raingutters became a rarity. Still, some big trucks and workvans still sport them, and they make for an elegant solution. A raingutter rack is strong and simple. Yakima has been making the venerable 1A Tower for eons.
